Energy Barn nearing completion

Hub’s conversion of an existing oak-framed hobby barn into a renewable energy generation hub is nearing completion. The facility, which sits on the edge of a Hampshire Estate, will lower the carbon footprint and provide the estate with a sustainable energy source. An acoustic enclosure is contained within the original barn framework to limit any noise from the plant within. This required careful coordination and detailing to meet the stringent acoustic requirements set by the local authority.

London Design Festival – events confirmed

Hub are pleased to announce their programme of events for the London Design Festival within the Queens Park Design District.

Between 21st and 25th September, Hub Architects will be holding a front of house exhibition to showcase recent work.  Architects and designers will be on hand to answer any questions.

A private party for our clients and consultants on Thursday 24th September will launch the centrepiece of the exhibition – showcasing our design ideas for the Tonle Sap project. This UNESCO wildlife  biosphere is regarded as the ‘heart’ of Cambodia and is home to over a million people in unique floating villages.

An open discussion around this project will take place on Friday 25th September between 12pm and 3pm for local schools and other interested parties, and we are holding a drop-in interactive session of  activities and experiments for children on Sunday between 2pm and 3pm. Please book via this Eventbrite link.

Completed basement shell for Grade II* listed house

The external shell of the new basement under this Grade II* listed building in Central London was completed this month. We achieved planning approval in late 2014 after working closely with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea planning department. We faced the challenge of extending the house without compromising the existing façade or breaching the existing height – the only way was down.

Whereas most of London’s houses sit on modest plots of land with strict rules on the height of properties, it comes as no surprise that basements are rapidly becoming popular. The BBC documentary ‘Millionaire Basement wars’, shown in April 2015, listened to the views of builders, owners and neighbours on this growing phenomenon. They claim 2000 basements have been dug in the past 10 years in Central London alone, removing three million tonnes of soil. While disruptive at the dig stage, could this be a more discreet answer to expanding property, at the same time preserving our streets and houses above ground?

Aldenham School shortlisted for Schüco Excellence Awards

Hub are pleased to announce that our Aldenham School 6th Form Centre and Music School was shortlisted for a Schüco Excellence Award for Design & Innovation in association with the RIBA Journal in June.

The Schüco Excellence Awards were launched in 2015 to recognise and celebrate the architects and specialist contractors that have collaborated in developing and realising Schüco facade, window and door systems for successful buildings.

The project also included Romag solar panels integrated in to the roof and upper floor glazing in the music centre foyer.

London Design Festival – 19th-27th September 2015

Hub Architects and Designers are proud to be part of the Queens Park Design District, a neighbourhood of creative folk and enterprise across a wide variety of disciplines, and this year, an official hub of the London Design Festival. There will be plenty going on in the local vicinity from open studios, installations and workshops with particular focus on Lonsdale Road, Salusbury Road and Kimberley Road. Just a few minutes walk from Brondsbury Park Station, Hub are crafting a plan to turn the offices at Hoopers Yard into a destination offering an exhibition, activities on the Sunday and an invitation to mosey around our studio and find out what we’ve been up to lately. Watch this space…
